The Mill and its history

Set in picturesque South Somerset, Clapton Mill is a unique piece of our industrial heritage.

With four pairs of stones, a huge 21ft diameter waterwheel - fed from two rivers, a complete Armfield roller mill plant and its original Ruston and Hornsby oil engine, Clapton Mill has a wealth of impressive features.

The Mill worked commercially until 1991 and is now being given a new lease of life as a working museum.  A recently installed hydroelectric turbine, generating green energy, has also brought new life and purpose and will help to secure the Mill's future. The turbine house and exit tunnel - click here to see a larger image. The turbine - click here to see a larger image.
